The Night Maya Used the Good Candle

A fictional story from The Pretty Palace.

A short story about making room for joy right now.

Maya had a candle she never lit. It was a gift, with a glass jar and a scent she loved. She kept it on her dresser for a special night. Each week, she dusted around it. Each week, she found a reason to wait.

One Tuesday, Maya came home tired. Dinner was toast and eggs. There were clothes to fold. She looked at the candle and thought, If I wait for a perfect night, how long will this sit here? She lit it before starting the laundry.

Nothing grand happened. Her phone still buzzed. A sock was missing. But the room smelled nice, and she put on a song she had not played in months. Folding clothes felt a little less like the end of a long day. It felt like time she had chosen for herself.

The next week, she used the good mug for tea. Then she wore her favorite earrings to buy groceries. Small joys did not fix every hard thing in her life. They did remind her that a normal day could hold something good.

Think of one nice thing you have been saving. A cup, a lotion, a dress, a playlist. You do not need to use it every day. You can choose one ordinary moment and let it matter.

Try this today

Choose one small joy today. When you use it, ask yourself: Why was I waiting?
